Scholarship Award Night

For the 24th straight year, the Spanish American Club, Inc. continues its mission of preserving the Hispanic heritage and community commitment in supporting Hispanic students of Martin and St. Lucie counties.

This year’s winners were Barbara Moreno of Stuart, Moriah Weir of Ft. Pierce, Jennifer Arriola of Ft. Pierce, Gabriela Garcia of Ft. Pierce and Dayana Espinosa of Ft. Pierce.

Barbara Moreno was born in Venezuela. Her parents, Luis Moreno was born in Venezuela and her mother Monica also was born in Venezuela. Barbara attended Clark Advanced Learning Center in Stuart. She will attend Florida International University and will major in Biomedical Engineering. She would like to pursue a career as an Engineer.

Moriah Weir was born in Manhattan, New York. Her parents, Michael Weir was born in Jamaica and her mother Jackie Weir was born in Trinidad. Moriah attended Fort Pierce Central High School. She will attend the University of Florida and will major in Journalism and Mass Communication. She would like to pursue a career in Broadcast Journalism.

Jennifer Arriola was born in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Her father, Sergio Arriola is from Matagalpa, Nicaragua and her mother Maria De Sales Marcos is from Oaxaca, Mexico. Jennifer attended Westwood High School. She will attend Florida Southern College and will major in Political Science with a minor in Pre-Law. She would like to pursue a career as an immigration Attorney. She will also be part of the Army ROTC program at Florida Southern.

Gabriela Garcia was born in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Her parents, José Garcia and María Garcia were born in Mexico. Gabriela attended Fort Pierce Central. She will attend University of Florida and will major in Health Science with a Pre-Medicine Track. She would like to pursue a career as an Orthopedic Surgeon.

Dayana Espinosa was born in Ft Pierce. Her parents, Gilberto and Maria Espinosa are from Mexico. Dayana attended Westwood High School. She will attend Florida Indian River State College and will major in the Medical Field. She would like to pursue a career as a Nurse.

This year scholarship committee Chair Nancy Rozon with Co-chairs Fe Valderuten and Ron Bryson did a magnificent job selecting the students and running the program smoothly. This year The Spanish American Club, Inc. board of directors are: Ruben Aleman; president, Nancy Rozon; vice president, Luis Carrillo; treasurer, Al Feliciano; secretary, Ray Guadalupe; public relations, Isa Bryson; director and Carlos Mejia; substitute.

The scholarship was established in 1992 for low-income Hispanic students. Since then, the club has awarded scholarships to 43 High School Seniors. Over the past 24 years, the club has awarded more than $28,000 in scholarships to the Hispanic senior of Martin and St. Lucie counties. The board raises money for the scholarships by having monthly dance parties and organizes other events such as picnics, cruises, bowling, golf and dominoes tournaments to raise funds for the scholarship and to run the club.

Spanish American Club Celebrates Annual Independences Party

“Celebrating our 25th Anniversary every month”

Members of The Spanish American Club, Inc. hosted the Annual Independences Party (USA, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia and Perú on Saturday, July 29 at the Disabled American Veteran’s Club in Port St. Lucie.

The 90 plus attendees were entertained by D.J. José Ramirez.  Members and their guests enjoyed an evening of drinks, snacks, dancing and raffles. Master of ceremonies and president of the club, Ruben Aleman, welcomed everyone to the party and gave an update of the status of the club and thanked every one of them for their continued support.

Followed the president’s update, Nancy Razon, scholarship director presented three scholarship winners, among them present were Barbara Moreno, Moriah Weir and Dayana Espinoza, then public relation director Ray Guadalupe presented the members that were celebrating their birthdays of the month of July, among them present wereJosé Echevaría, Annie Borras, Ron Bryson, Rosa Torres, Mirta Zapata, Terry Peña and Dayana Espinoza while the D.J. played a Happy Birthday song for them.

Grand prize raffle winners: David Rodriguez ($300), Al Feliciano ($200) and ($100). Door prize winners: Unidentified Guest, Ricardo Castro, Elizabeth Mejía, Alicia Abbate, Mary Figliola, Unidentified Guest B. Padilla, Dayana Espinoza, Rosa Torres, Maritza Rivera, Lourdes Turragde, Ed Parra and Unidentified Guest. 50/50 winners were: 50/50 José Andrade and Gladys Vélez.

The mission of the club is to promote friendship and solidarity among its members, neighbors and other institutions of the Treasure Coast through cultural, social and civic activities to promote knowledge. Throughout the year, the members meet once a month to socialize, dine and dance.  The group also gives scholarships to local students, Thanksgiving food baskets to needy families and Christmas toys to children of low income families.

A big thanks to our members and guests who helped with the decorations, set ups and assisted throughout the night.  The board is planning the next event “50’s Dance” on Saturday, August 26 at the same location. Reservations are required.

Future events of the club this year: Luau Dance, Saturday September 30; Halloween Dance, Saturday October 28; Thanksgiving Dance, Saturday November 25, Annual Cruise, Thursday December 7 and Christmas Dance, Friday December 22. Reservations are required.

Festejan los socios del Spanish American Club, Inc. “SACI” Baile anual de las Independencias

“Celebrando 25 años de existencia todos los meses”

Los socios del Spanish American Club, Inc. celebraron el “Baile Anual de las Independencias” (USA, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia y Perú el sábado 29 de julio en el Disabled American Veteran’s Club en la ciudad de Port St. Lucie.

Con la asistencia de más de 90 socios e invitados disfrutaron de una noche llena de alegría, con tragos, picadas, baile y rifas. El evento lo amenizó el D.J. José Ramírez. Los maestros de ceremonias fueron el Presidente Rubén Alemán, el Secretario Al Feliciano y el Director de Relaciones Públicas Ray Guadalupe.

En un receso, Nancy Rozon, Directora del la beca estudiantil presentó a tres de los cinco estudiantes ganadores de la beca este año-Barbara Moreno, Moriah Weir y Dayana Espinoza.   Luego se sorteron los premios los premios mayores, premios de entrada y las rifas del 50/50 y al final el D.J. José Ramírez le tocó una canción de cumpleaños a los socios que estaban celebrando sus cumpleaños en el mes de julio. Entre los presentes estaban José Echevaría, Annie Borras, Ron Bryson, Rosa Torres, Mirta Zapata, Terry Peña and Dayana Espinoza

Los ganadores de los premios fueron: David Rodriguez ($300), Al Feliciano ($200) y David Rodriguez ($100). Algunos de los ganadores de los premios de entrada fueron: Ricardo Castro, Elizabeth Mejía, Alicia Abbate, Mary Figliola, B. Padilla, Dayana Espinoza, Rosa Torres, Maritza Rivera, Lourdes Turragde y Ed Parra. Los ganadores de los 50/50 fueron: José Andrade and Gladys Vélez.

El Club es una corporación con fines no lucrativos fundada en el 1992 para conservar y promover la cultura hispana en la Costa del Tesoro. El objetivos principal es promover el intercambio cultural, de idioma, geografía, costumbres, historia, arte y folklore de los paises de habla hispana.

La próxima actividad de los socios este mes está planeada para el sábado 26 de agosto para celebrar el Baile de los 50’s en el mismo local.  Reservación es requerida.

El calendario de actividades del club para el resto del año son las siquientes: Baile de Luau, sábado 30 de septiembre; Baile de las Brujas, sábado 28 de octubre; Baile de Acción de Gracias, sábado 25 de noviembre; Crucero-11 noches (Cartagena, Colombia, Colón, Panamá, Puerto Limón, Costa Rica, Roatán, Honduras, Harvest Caye, Belize and Costa Maya, Mexico), jueves 7 de diciembre y Baile/Cena de Navidad, viernes 27 de diciembre.

Spanish American Club honors members during their Annual Christmas Dinner Dance

On Friday, December 29, 2017, at the Annual Christmas Dinner Dance at the Polish American Social Club in Port St. Lucie a special awards were given to some director of the club for their service, contribution and dedication to the club. Among them were: Nancy Rozon, Isa Bryson, Ray Guadalupe and Al Feliciano.

Other committee members that also were recognized for their service and were given gift card certificates were: Carlos Mejia, Angel and Nerida Pellot, Dick and Karen Diamond, Josie Guadalupe, Virginia Feliciano, Evelyn Carrillo and Diana Nieves. The awards were presented by the president of the club Ruben Aleman. Congratulation to all of them.   It was enjoyable event.

25th Anniversary

On Saturday, June 27, 2017, at the Anniversary Dinner Dance at the Disabled American Veteran Club in Port St. Lucie a special awards were given to Herman and Lucy Santa in recognition of their 25 years of exceptional service to the club. The awards were presented by the president of the club Ruben Aleman.

Club’s secretary Al Feliciano made a short speech in honor of myself and my wife Lucy as co-founders of the club. Thanks Al and Ruben and your board for the awards.
