Disco Extravaganza 2018
By Charlie Quiles
“Toot! Toot! Ahhh! Beep! Beep!” So went the lyrical refrain from the 70s song hit “Bad Girls” by that sensual diva Donna Summer. The Brysons (Isa and her hubbie Ron) were doing a most beautiful rendition of the dance craze of that era. Yes, it was ‘Disco Extravaganza’ night for ‘The Spanish American Club, Inc.’
Although most of the male attendees had discarded their bell-bottom pants and platform shoes long ago, two holdouts, Crichton McCutcheon and Arlo Bodden vied for best dressed participant. They both looked sharp in their well fitted suits à la ‘John Travolta’. However, Crichton edged out Arlo to win the distinguished honor. Never to be outdone by any man, the ‘Queen of the Disco’ this night turned out to be Nereida Pellot. Resplendent in her bell-bottomed pantsuit topped by her afro hairdo, she stole the show.
Music was provided by Johnny Saltos blending our typical favorite salsas, cumbias and merengues wih a sprinkling of those disco hits of yesteryear. Enough so as to emphasize the theme of the night. Members celebrating birthdays this month were Angel Pellot, Maritza Rivera, Rosanna Parra, Linda Manzanares, Leo Román, Mercy Román and Eliézer Torres. Our club wishes everyone of you many, many more happy years to come.
Lucky Door prize winners Evelyn Carrillo, Elizabeth Mejia and Maria McCutcheon enjoyed their well deserved gifts. Wow! What a country? You can be a winner just by walking through the door. Nancy Ramos and Galud Segura won all of the ‘CASH’, this night. They split the 50/50 raffle drawing. Proceeds benefit our generous ‘Scholarship Fund’. The ‘Club’ thanks all who participated in support of this charitable cause.
On a more somber note, tonight President Ruben Aleman called for a moment of silent prayer for one of our very own, longtime member Charlie Rodriguez. Charlie passed away recently, consequences of an accident suffered at home. May you rest in peace, brother.
A new raffle was introduced to the membership at this venue. The Club is raffling off an ‘HP’ Pavilion TouchScreen 15.6” Full HD IPS Notebook computer. It has a state of the art Intel Core i7 processor, 24 GB memory, 1TB hard drive, an HD FOV Webcam, Windows 10 Home with a 2YR Care Pack included. Winner need not be present at the drawing which will be held at our October 27th event. Proceeds from this raffle will be earmarked toward bolstering the Club’s dwindling coffers a result of such outstanding summer events as the Annual Picnic; both the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Dances, and finally; the Extraordinary General Assembly.
The hard work of our Board of Directors: President, Ruben Aleman; Vice President, Nancy Rozon; Treasurer, Luis Carillo; Secretary, Raquel O’Connor; Public Relations Director, Ramon Guadalupe; Director, Carlos Mejia, and; Substitute Director, Charlie Quiles has to be acknowledged. Thank you all, we applaud your efforts.
Special note: unfortunately, Luis Carrillo had to resign his position for personal reasons. We all wish you well. We cherish the efforts you put forth for ‘the Club’. Thank you, Luis.
Hasta la proxima! (Until next time!)

Postscript: August 26 th , 2018 Extraordinary General Assembly The success of the extremely entertaining ‘Disco Extravaganza Dance’ with accolades for the D.J. streaming in from many members proved to be a precursor to the accomplishments that were to follow. On this afternoon, members gathered together to evaluate two important proposals effecting the S.A.C.I. By-Laws. The first would ratify an English translation of the original Spanish text. The second would use that translated text to streamline an otherwise cumbersome document.
A vote to approve the two proposals by the Founding Fathers and the Former Directors (a prerequisite before presenting it to the full membership) passed overwhelmingly. An objection to the timing of this vote was disallowed when referred to the existing by-laws. Another objection as to who qualified as a Former Director was addressed, however it did not adversely effect the initial outcome. Next, the full assembly cast their votes to accept the two proposals, by an even larger margin.
The By-Laws Committee members Herman Santa, Maria A. Quiles and Charlie Quiles were acknowledged by the membership for their time and devotion to this monumental undertaking. Special mention for their contributions to this task were presented to Lucy Santa, Ruben Aleman, Al Feliciano, Maria and Gilberto Ferri.

“Toot! Toot! Ahhh! Beep! Beep!”
