By Herman Santa

Adriana Rodriguez, scholarship winner 2011

The Spanish American Club, Inc. (SACI) awarded a third scholarship this year to a local Hispanic student.  The third student is Adriana Rodriguez who was born in Santiago   de Cuba and now lives in Port St. Lucie.  Adriana was graduated from Port St. Lucie High School.  She will study Physiology at Indian River State College.

The student was selected as a winner for the year 2011 from more that 16 students who applied for the scholarship of the club.  The award is presented each year by the club and is based on grades, academic accomplishments and economic needs.

This year scholarship committee is chaired by Herman Santa and co-chairs are Isa Bryson and Nancy Rozon.  They selected the students (Adriana Rodriguez, Nancy Velazquez and Tatiana Muñoz) for their achievements, trustworthiness, character, responsibility, fairness, caring and academics.

The students were asked to write an essay in Spanish and submit letters of recommendation.  They were interviewed by the committee and were asked several questions concerning their goals and objectives and why they deserved the scholarships.  The students have been awarded $500 scholarships each.

The (SACI) is a non profit organization.  The club was founded in 1992 by 9 Hispanics families from Martin and St. Lucie Counties to promote the Hispanic heritage and to unite the Hispanics on the Treasure Coast.  The SACI scholarship was established in 1992 for low income Hispanic students.  Over 25 High School seniors from Martin and St. Lucie had benefited from the scholarships.  Over $13,000 has been awarded to them.
