Halloween Dance with D.J. José Ramírez at the Polish American Club

By Charlie Quiles

AAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!! Cried out one lady when abruptly confronted by the Ninja’ Clad Warrior’ who turned out to be a dear acquaintance of hers. This night was attended by Pirates, Ninjas, Witches and even a Ghost or two. It was enough to scare this man out of his ‘Doggy’ costume. We had an Egyptian contingency of beautifully dressed maidens accompanied by Ramses, the great pharaoh. No problem, we had our own Roman senator, not actually, it was Caesar himself to keep them in check. He was accompanied by his regally dressed wife, ‘The Queen’. ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ made an appearance as ‘Elvin Beauties’scampered about. A ‘Knight in Shining Armor’ fearlessly protected his own feline belle from the allures of the ‘Doggy Man’.

A few ‘Gangsta’ figures including at least one ‘moll’ were present. They were all salivating at the presence of the ‘Monopoly Banker’ for some reason. Even a ‘Lady of the Night’ pranced about in a flirtatiously revealing outfit, “Ooh, la, la”. The peasant class were not without representation either ‘Juan Valdes’ along with one or two Colombian lovelies were there. Lest we forget, ‘The Nerd’ went about handing out pictures of himself. How he conquered the heart of that wonderfully dressed ‘Egyptian maiden’ is beyond anybody’s guess.

Tonight’s highlight included the drawing of the raffle for the ‘HP Laptop computer’. It was won by Tania Carrillo who did not attend tonight’s festivities. The raffle has proven to be a valuable boost to the Club’s coffers. Hopefully it will continue to provide needed revenue to help fuel these amazing events. The next raffle and prize will be announced shortly. Thank you to all participants.

Again, as usual, all of this was made possible through the hard work of our Board of Directors: President, Ruben Aleman; Vice President, Nancy Rozon; Treasurer, Lionel Roman; Secretary, Raquel O’Connor; Public Relations Director, Ramon Guadalupe; Director, Carlos Mejia, and Substitute Director, Charlie Quiles. The Club applauds your efforts. Thank you all.

26th Anniversary of SACI with D.J. José Ramírez at The Polish American Club

by Charlie Quiles

On Saturday, September 28…..and then the clock struck 6 as club members and their spouses trickled into the ballroom. Awaiting them, the tables were beautifully decorated each with a bouquet of flowers and flags representing the various Latino countries, indicative of the many nationalities present at this festivity. Some guests in attendance dressed in the traditional garb of their respective nation. In any event they all came ready to party.

A short delay was experienced when the DJ forgot this was a Friday night event and not the usual Saturday night affair. However, that did not seem to dampen the spirits of the attendees one bit. When he (DJ) finally made his appearance, it was to loud cheers. With the aid of our club members he quickly set up his equipment and once again they were all ready to party down.

They danced to a variety of salsas, merengues, cumbias, bachata and even one or two reggaeton. At one point, DJ Jose stopped the music to honor a request by Dick and Karen Diamond. The attendees were entertained by the Diamonds as they danced to the romantic ballad by Roberto Carlos, “Si El Amor Se Va”.

Lucky Door prize winners were Yvonne Bonet, Wanda Oquendo, Javier Andrade, Vivian Megaro, Aida Vélez. and finally Sandra Jimenez and Lucy Santa won the split 50/50 raffle drawing. Proceeds benefit our generous ‘Scholarship Fund’. The ‘Club’ thanks all who participated in support of this charitable cause.” (excerpt provided by Herman Santa ‘unofficial club historian’)

During this period, President Ruben Aleman called for a moment of silence in honor of our own Luis Carrillo. Luis served as the Club Treasurer until recently when he had to step down due to the excruciating pains of his overwhelming illness. He succumbed to his ailment shortly thereafter. Luis, you served your Club well. You will be sorely missed.

Again, as usual, all of this was made possible through the hard work of our Board of Directors: President, Ruben Aleman; Vice President, Nancy Rozon; Treasurer, Lionel Roman; Secretary, Raquel O’Connor; Public Relations Director, Ramon Guadalupe; Director, Carlos Mejia, and; Substitute Director, Charlie Quiles. Disco Extravaganza 2018 with D.J. Johnny Saltos

By Charlie Quiles

“Toot! Toot! Ahhh! Beep! Beep!” So went the lyrical refrain from the 70s song hit “Bad Girls” by that sensual diva Donna Summer. The Brysons (Isa and her hubbie Ron) were doing a most beautiful rendition of the dance craze of that era. Yes, it was ‘Disco Extravaganza’ night for ‘The Spanish American Club, Inc.’

Although most of the male attendees had discarded their bell-bottom pants and platform shoes long ago, two holdouts, Crichton McCutcheon and Arlo Bodden vied for best dressed participant. They both looked sharp in their well fitted suits à la ‘John Travolta’. However, Crichton edged out Arlo to win the distinguished honor. Never to be outdone by any man, the ‘Queen of the Disco’ this night turned out to be Nereida Pellot. Resplendent in her bell-bottomed pantsuit topped by her afro hairdo, she stole the show.

Music was provided by Johnny Saltos blending our typical favorite salsas, cumbias and merengues wih a sprinkling of those disco hits of yesteryear. Enough so as to emphasize the theme of the night. Members celebrating birthdays this month were Angel Pellot, Maritza Rivera, Rosanna Parra, Linda Manzanares, Leo Román, Mercy Román and Eliézer Torres. Our club wishes everyone of you many, many more happy years to come.

Lucky Door prize winners Evelyn Carrillo, Elizabeth Mejia and Maria McCutcheon enjoyed their well deserved gifts. Wow! What a country? You can be a winner just by walking through the door. Nancy Ramos and Galud Segura won all of the ‘CASH’, this night. They split the 50/50 raffle drawing. Proceeds benefit our generous ‘Scholarship Fund’. The ‘Club’ thanks all who participated in support of this charitable cause.

On a more somber note, tonight President Ruben Aleman called for a moment of silent prayer for one of our very own, longtime member Charlie Rodriguez. Charlie passed away recently, consequences of an accident suffered at home. May you rest in peace, brother.

A new raffle was introduced to the membership at this venue. The Club is raffling off an ‘HP’ Pavilion TouchScreen 15.6” Full HD IPS Notebook computer. It has a state of the art Intel Core i7 processor, 24 GB memory, 1TB hard drive, an HD FOV Webcam, Windows 10 Home with a 2YR Care Pack included. Winner need not be present at the drawing which will be held at our October 27th event. Proceeds from this raffle will be earmarked toward bolstering the Club’s dwindling coffers a result of such outstanding summer events as the Annual Picnic; both the Mothers’ and Fathers’ Dances, and finally; the Extraordinary General Assembly.

The hard work of our Board of Directors: President, Ruben Aleman; Vice President, Nancy Rozon; Treasurer, Luis Carillo; Secretary, Raquel O’Connor; Public Relations Director, Ramon Guadalupe; Director, Carlos Mejia, and; Substitute Director, Charlie Quiles has to be acknowledged. Thank you all, we applaud your efforts.

Special note: unfortunately, Luis Carrillo had to resign his position for personal reasons. We all wish you well. We cherish the efforts you put forth for ‘the Club’. Thank you, Luis. Hasta la proxima! (Until next time!)

Independence Celebration with D.J. José Ramírez at “Polish American Club”

By Charlie Quiles

As any club member will readily admit we are represented by a diverse group of Latin American cultures. However, we recognize and welcome all cultures from around our globe. Our membership is comprised of a panoply of individuals. We are Iberians; we are Italians; we are French; we are Germans; we are Scots; we are English. Most of all and very importantly we share the common thread of living in a land that has provided most of us with the ability to eke out a decent life for ourselves and our families, the United States of America.

Earlier this month, on July 4th, the U.S.A. celebrated it’s independence in 1776. July holds a special significance for many of our neighbors throughout our western hemisphere for the same reason. Independence came to Colombia on July 20, 1810; to Venezuela on July 5, 1811; to Argentina on July 9, 1816; to Peru on July 28, 1821; to Canada on July 1, 1867, and; to the Bahamas on July 10, 1973. There must be something about those hot summer months that made the blood boil with a yearning to be free.

Anyway, we asked our members to bring a symbol of their cultural heritage. Carlos Mejía brought his Colombian national flag, his wife Elizabeth a bright red and white plaque with the coat of arms of Perú. Nancy Rozon was dressed in a white blouse with yellow, blue, red ruffles and bright red slacks. Her niece Rosie Basabe displayed the same resplendent colors throughout her outfit expressing their Venezuelan culture.

Some of our Puertorriqueño (Puerto Rican) members wore traditional guayaberas (lightweight cloth jacket for men). Borinqueños Charlie and Maria Quiles, wore non-traditional t-shirts emblazoned with the Puerto Rican flag in the background. Three individuals were depicted within the flag: a Spanish conquistador; a Taíno warrior, and a person of African descent. His were men and hers were women. Inscribed on the shirts were the words ‘Mi Raza’ acknowledging a mix of races, all of them contributors to the proud Puerto Rican heritage.

The hard work of our Board of Directors: President, Rubén Alemán; Vice President, Nancy Rozon; Treasurer, Luis Carillo; Acting Interim Secretary, Charlie Quiles; Public Relations Director, Ramón Guadalupe, and Director, Carlos Mejía has to be acknowledged. Thank you all, we applaud your efforts.
