Dominoes 1999 (Tournament)
“Los Playeros,” Champions of the Dominoes Tournament at Tony Ortiz’s residence.
By Herman Santa
The “Playeros,” composed of José Encarnación and his son Alex Encarnación from Port St. Lucie, have been alone in first place since the start of the “Domino Tournament.” The “Playeros” eliminated “Los Dominantes,” made up of Herman Santa and Willie González, for the 5-game playoff series. The second match was played on Saturday, June 13, at the residence of Tony and Barbara Ortíz in the city of White City. We also had a good time there as the venue is suitable for this type of activity. Tony and Barbara have a room specially prepared for playing dominoes. And as the saying goes, “They threw the doors out the window.”
There were two “Chivas” or “Pollonas” during the tournament. The trophies will be presented on October 31 at the ‘Masquerade Ball.’ Each of the ten players will receive a trophy on behalf of the “Spanish American Club, Inc.” The order of awards is as follows: First Place, “Los Playeros,” Second Place, “Los Dominantes,” Third Place, “Los Americanos,” Fourth Place, “Los Gordos,” and Fifth Place, “Los Gallos.” Next year, it is expected that the tournament will have more participants. It will start in spring, and the rules will be modified a bit to make the tournament shorter. To all the participants, thank you for your kindness and the hospitality you provided in your homes. The tournament was a great success; we look forward to seeing you next year!

By Herman Santa
On Saturday, October 30, 2010, Danny and Jaimie Duval opened up their beautiful home in Port St. Lucie for the member’s monthly Get Together, and their guests. The monthly social event reception was an opportunity for many members to meet new members, eat and dance and raise funds for the scholarship. Among the new faces were Ana Moran, Julio Garcia and Luisa Cintron.
The Annual Halloween Party was a big success. The members and their guests had a wonderful time dancing to the latin beat of Mendoza Sound. Many members and their guests walked away with raffle prizes, and all went home with hopes that next year the event will be better. The event raised some funds for the scholarship. The food was delicious, the music was great, and the decoration committee did a good job. We saw ghosts, clowns, monsters, vampires, pirates and witches. There were door prizes, 50/50 raffle, best costumes and hat a dance contest.
The best costumes winners were: 1st Place; Felix Asencio(Romeo) and Millie Gordon (Cleopatra), 2nd Place; Xiomara Guanill (Clown); John and Blanche Duval (Hillbillies); 3rd Place; 4th Place: Danny Duval (Policeman) and 5th Place; Virginia and Al Feliciano (Cowboys). Cruise 2010 (Liberty of the Seas)
Eastern Caribbean Cruise: Spectacular scenes, fun, food, music and friends
By Herman Santa
What a cruise. Where to start? I guess St. Maarten (Dutch) or St. Martin (French) would do, since that was the real start to our wonderful cruise journey through the Caribbean. On Sunday morning, 19 members and their guests of the Spanish American Club, Inc. (SACI) went on 7 day cruise to the Eastern Caribbean. We met our cruise guides Nora Candelario and her sister Delia Diaz from Vacation Superstore, Inc. at the parking lot of Public’s Supermarket in Jensen Beach and boarded our motor coach for the 2 hour ride to the Port of Miami, where our ship Liberty of the Seas was ducked.
We cruised for 4 days until we reached the Island of St. Martin. Some of us decided on a city tour with a trip to Philipsburg, the capital of St. Martin. As our tour guide explained the history of the island, the natives named it “Saualiga” or Land of Salt”, one can immediately notice the Dutch influence by the pastel-colored houses with their 2nd story verandas and courtyards filled with flowers. When we arrived at the French side, we stopped at the Flea market. We shopped for jewelry, clothing and tasted the exotic cocktail made with the native rum-base guava berry liquor.
The next stop was San Juan, Puerto Rico; some took the Old San Juan (Fort El Morro) tour but Lucy and I decided to see my brother Tomas and his wife Nilda who were waiting for us near the ship. They gave us a tour of the Capitol Building or “El Capitolio” which is located next to the fort. After the tour we shopped in downtown old San Juan, then stopped for some “picadas” such as “alcapurrias” and “bolas de yuca” at “The Latin Store Restaurant” before boarding the ship.
The following day, our ship was ducked at the island of Labadee in Haiti. The Island is leased by Royal Caribbean. After the bar-b-cue, we took a tour of the island and visited the old Bell Tower, the Columbus Trading Post or Nellie’s Place, the main historical monuments on Labadee. According to our tour guide, Christopher Columbus landed there on his 2nd trip on November, 1492. We were fortunate to have beautiful weather during the entire trip.
We enjoyed the food (Beautiful dining rooms), the ice-skating ring, the theatre (Good comedians), the water parks, the decks with big swimming pools and spas, the gym, the bands (Latin, Caribbean, rock and roll and the orchestra), the disco and of course the shops on Royal Promenade and the Casino Royale. On the last day, we cruised at night between Haiti and Miami. A beautiful night with a full moon and a nice sea breeze, a calm night to seat back and watch Mother Nature go by. It was beautiful end to an incredible journey that we never forget.

Golf 2000 (Tournament-SACI)
Annual Golf Tournament
By Herman Santa
The “3rd Golf Tournament” of the Spanish American Club, Inc. was successfully held on Saturday, November 5, 2000. Art Morales, the son of Peruvian parents, and his American partner Derek Wright dominated in the “Low Gross” category among 12 players, finishing with a score of 64 over par (+3) in a “Two Men Best Ball” competition held at the beautiful Savanna Club in Port St. Lucie, under a clear sky and a gentle breeze.
Ivan Murrell, a native of Panama, and his American companion Dana Peterson, with a total of 66 over par (+5) in the “Low Gross,” came in second place. Ivan Murrell also won the “Closest to the Pin” and “The Longest Drive.” Other competitors who played but did not win prizes included Dominican Al Saladin and his son born here, Francis Saladin, who finished in 3rd place. The Puerto Ricans Joe Castro and Luis Rosa placed 4th. Lic. Victor Swift from the United States and Herman Santa from Puerto Rico ranked in 5th place. The Cubans Arnaldo Palenzuela and Argelio Del Valle finished in 6th place. Bo Bosecker paid the fee but could not play.
After the tournament, the golfers ended up celebrating at the “Pueblo Viejo” Restaurant in Port St. Lucie, where they had some drinks and distributed the trophies. The most important thing, however, is that everyone shared a common purpose as amateur players, some with very little competitive experience: to enjoy time with fellow members and have a good time together in a healthy and cheerful environment. “The main thing is that everyone has a good time and enjoys a pleasant day while also promoting friendship and unity among Hispanic golfers,” said the Club president, Arnaldo Palenzuela. We would like to thank all the participants for their support. These are the activities that the Club needs to unite Hispanics in the area. Activities like these help the Club move forward. Long live S.A.C.I.!
