Successful First Golf Tournament!

By Herman Santa

Slowly but surely, Hispanic golfers in Port St. Lucie are coming together, and the North Americans who are members or friends of the club’s partners are no exception. Sixteen golfers from the area gathered on October 25th to celebrate the “1st Golf Tournament” of the Spanish American Club, Inc. Dominican Al Saladín and Venezuelan Gustavo Troconis teamed up to shoot a round of 65, 4 over par, becoming the champions of the 1998 tournament.

Other results from the competition sponsored by the Spanish American Club, Inc. included American Bo Bosecker and Peruvian Art Morales finishing in second place for “Low Gross,” under the “Two Man Scramble” format with a score of 70. Dominican Liz Castillo and her brother Francis Saladín concluded in third place. Meanwhile, the “Closest to the Pin” award was won by Art Morales (hole #3), while “The Longest Drive” went to Liz Castillo (hole #13).

After the tournament, there was a lunch at the home of Ed and Maria Finnerty, who prepared hamburgers and hot dogs with very cold beer for us. The delicious rice with sausages that Maria had specially prepared for the occasion could not be missing. Then the certificates that Ed had acquired were awarded. We spent a day of camaraderie among partners and friends. Thank you, Ed and Maria, for your hospitality. Through the newsletter, we want to thank the Golf committee and the merchants who donated certificates for the tournament.

The tournament’s proceeds will go to a scholarship for a Hispanic student in the area. When the club was founded in 1992, many of the founders envisioned a club where members could raise funds through such activities. We must thank the Board of Directors, especially President Arnaldo Paienzuela, who has been the driving force behind the club’s growth and recognition.
