Annual Picnic at Ft Pierce Inlet State Park

By Cecilia Vignier

The members of the Spanish American Club decided to go to the “Pic-nic” beach on Saturday, June 30, in celebration of “Father’s Day.”

The club members gathered at the “Florida State Inlet Park” in Ft. Pierce. They were joined as guests by Mr. Carlos and Maria Meléndez with their granddaughter Maritza Meléndez, age 5, Arturo and Patricia Morales, Mrs. Cecilia Ruíz and her beloved mother Mrs. Inecita vda. de Ruiz, as well as Mrs. Rosina Allen and her little daughter Natasha, and Mr. Johnny Saltos.

Everyone present enjoyed a beautiful sunny day with a tasty breeze from the Atlantic Ocean. The food consisted of the best delicious dishes prepared by the families. The venue was decorated with palm trees and coconuts, along with multicolored masks to give the ambiance a Caribbean feel. As always, this friendly group celebrated the birthdays of the children of members Charlene and Sheila Vélez and Rebeca Gayoso, who have their birthdays in June.

1st Scholarship Dance with D.J. music at the Community Center

Por Herman Santa

On Saturday, May 18, 1996, the members of the “Spanish American Club, Inc.” from Martin and St. Lucie counties celebrated the first “Scholarship Dance” at the Community Center in Port St. Lucie. The dance was enlivened by the great “Dou Riviera” from Port St. Lucie and by the club’s D.J.s (Herman, Juan Carlos, and Cesar). The funds raised will be exclusively for the scholarship we donate to a Latino student to help them attend college. Thanks to Duo Riviera, the club’s D.J.s, the scholarship committee, the directors of the club, and those who made donations.

Spanish American Club participates in PSL Anniversary Parade

By Herman Santa

Once again, the Spanish American Club, Inc. (SACI) was well represented at the 50th Anniversary of the city of Port St. Lucie.  The parade was held at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center on April 30. Many members and their families marched behind the banners of the club.  Vice President Kathy Rivera, Past President Jimmy Rivera and President Mary Figliola held a banner with the logo of the club while they smiled at the crowd throughout the parade.  Directors Nora Candelario and Nancy Rozon held another banner.  Behind them were Herman Santa, Felix Asencio and Billie Betancourt with Colombian, Puerto Rican and American flags.

Many volunteers associated with SACI walked along with the members along the parade route. Among them were Robert Candelario, Al Feliciano, Angel and Nereida Pellot, Danny Duval, Jamie Rivera, Isa Gallant and Millie Gordon.  Other members who didn’t walk but joined the members after the parade were Lucy Santa, Virginia Feliciano, Frank Schroedl and Laura La O.

Thank you to the members and their families who participated on the parade. With their presence, the event was a success.  The SACI was the only group representing the Hispanics on the Treasure Coast.

Dominoes games at Encarnación’s house

By Herman Santa

The “Playeros,” composed of José Encarnación and his son Alex Encarnación from Port St. Lucie, have been alone in first place since the start of practices for the Domino Tournament. The “Playeros” eliminated “Los Dominantes,” made up of Herman Santa and Willie González, for the five-game playoff series. Last year in the seven-game championship, held at the González family residence, the “Playeros” improved with four victories and qualified for the tournament.
